Investing in our personal growth through mentoring, spiritual advising, and coaching is invaluable. Many times in my walk with the Lord I needed additional help, support, love, and guidance. When I had a mentor to go to for advice, where I could ask questions, and receive prayer and encouragement, it made all the difference. However, times when I did not, proved immensely more challenging and set me back several times significantly.
The guidance and support from a person who’s navigated similar paths can illuminate our journey, providing clarity, wisdom, understanding, discernment, and comfort. The wisdom gained from their experiences is a treasure, sparing us from avoidable mistakes and accelerating our progress considerably. I have always told my students that I want them to learn from my mistakes because it will save them unnecessary hardship!
Additionally, having a trustworthy person with whom we can transparently share our weaknesses, strengths, struggles, and victories without being judged, competed with, or gossiped about is becoming increasingly rare today, even in Christian circles. We all need safe and healthy leaders in our lives to help us reach our goals, hold us accountable, and speak blessings over us along the way.
